ZOMBIELAND

September 23rd,2009–

Wow. Columbia Pictures has really ramped up the marketing on their new horror-comedy Zombieland. There doesn’t seem to be place on the internet where I can’t see that creepy zombie clown staring over at me. In addition, there have been numerous screenings for the movie and it doesn’t even release until Oct 2. This screening is actually the second screening in Baltimore. Check out the details.

On Wednesday September 23rd (tonight!) at 7:30 p.m., Towson Commons will be hosting a sneak screening of Zombieland. It’s a free screening but the only way in is either with a physical ticket or one printed from Facebook. And if you are hankering for some brains–or laughs–and you have a Facebook account, you can get access to a pair of tickets for tonight’s show. Continue reading

Let’s get one thing out of the way up-front: the zombies are starting to lose their luster.

Whether lurching, creeping, shambling, or sprinting, the living dead have more than worn out their welcome. Resuscitated by 28 Days Later, sustained by the Dawn remake and catapulted to stardom by Shaun, the genre has crawled from its grave and now runs amok eating the brains of indiscriminate horror fans everywhere. Fortunately, Ruben Fleischer’s Zombieland is about to come along and joyfully hammer the last nail into this cinematic coffin. Continue reading

Dafoe

June 26th, 2009–

I’d be tempted to call this Equilibrium with vampires if it wasn’t for the fact we already got that, from the same director, called Ultraviolet. And it sucked something fierce, no pun intended.

Instead, Daybreakers might  be trying to unhinge the universe from its complacency by threatening to give us something actually original. True Blood has synthetic hemoglobin and Twilight has vamps who have refrained from the human version altogether. Now, the Australian Spiereg Bros., who made the low-budget zombie film Undead, have concocted a darker world where nearly everyone is a vampire and they keep the humans in storage facilities not unlike The Matrix so they can harvest them at will. Without the blood, it appears the vampires go feral and revert to a more monstrous version(see the pic below). To add to their troubles, the human race is going extinct and the threat of a vanishing food supply looms large. Continue reading

Woody and Little Miss Sunshine VS. the Zombies

ZOMBIELAND

June 12th 2009-

Zombies, zombies and more zombies. When exactly did the big EVENT happen that rendered our world overrun by the flesh eaters? I’m not sure I can even pinpoint the exact moment anymore.  I think it was 28 Days Later right, that brought the brain-munchers back? And then Dawn of the Dead, Shaun of the Dead and every third movie after that. We’ve had aussie zombies (Undead), french non-violent existential zombies (They Came Back), and scottish Billy Connelly as a dead pet (Fido).  And, one guesses, we won’t be rid of them soon. And as long as we keep getting little gems like the recent Dance of the Dead I’m game. Continue reading
