September 29th,2009–

cinemagrade b+Alex Rivera’s Sleep Dealer is one of the most grounded science fiction films I’ve ever seen. The first time director has referred to his work as  “science fiction with many anchors in today’s reality.” He isn’t joking. In the future according to Sleep Dealer, Mexico is walled off, their water supply has become privatized, and day-laborers don’t even have to leave the country to take immigrant jobs. Now Playing: ‘Surrogates’ explores our technological obsession

September 26th, 2009–

cinemagrade b-In the new Bruce Willis techno-thriller Surrogates, humanity’s collective desire for ease, comfort and convenience prove to be its undoing.   Adapted from the graphic novel by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele, Surrogates shows us a future where our reliance on technology has become the ultimate crutch. Instead of a dreary, rain-soaked dystopia, the world of the film is a bright, shiny, peaceful place. From a material and cultural standpoint, everything looks like sunshine and kittens. Something is missing though. Continue reading

Stop the Presses!!! Now this is a summer movie trailer!!!

District9trailerpic

July 8th, 2009–

Wow. This is probably the third time I’ve written about this flick, but it just keeps getting better and better. Neil Blonkamp’s District 9 landed at the top of my most anticipated sci-fi films of the summer list, and this new trailer just solidifies what I suspected; this is going to be seriously awesome. Alien refugees, shadowy government conspiracies, humans infected with alien powers, advanced technology, a brewing interspecies throw-down. If you are any kind of science fiction fan at all, you owe it to yourself to check out this trailer. I also enjoy that they have taken the time to school Michael Bay on how to design a good robot.  Click over HERE to enter District 9. This one lands in August.

Ok, so who has seen Terminator: Salvation? Lets hear! How was it?

Heres the deal. I was hoping to see Terminator: Salvation last night, but my wife wasn’t feeling well so we stayed back and caught up on a few other films I had lying about. Thing is, the critical response to this one is brutal. No one is calling it awful, save for a few passionate voices, but it sounds like it might be even worse than awful–mediocre. I’ve been hearing lots of things, but not much from the regular movie-going public. What do you guys think about it?

I want to hear from as many as have seen it. If you want to drop full-out reviews, that’s cool, or just a line or two in the comments. If you have a link to another blog, send it by. I’m going to see this weekend regardless, but I thought it would be cool to see how united or disconnected the typical audience reaction is compared to the critical reaction.

So lets hear it! Is Terminator: Salvation a beacon of Professionalism or is it just a flippin’ amateur?

Animated fantasy ‘9’ gets awesome new trailer

20 May

nine

May 20th, 2009-

Last week I posted an article here anticipating 10 science fiction films being released over the next five months. With negative reviews of Terminator: Salvation already surfacing, I’m wondering how many of those mentioned movies will be worth seeing. On the other hand, 9, which looked fantastic in teaser format looks even better as a full-blown trailer. We get to hear Plummer, Reilly, Wood and Connelly and there is a clearer sense of what happened to the world in this trailer. I just really love the retro sci-fi design of this one and the story looks like pure pulpy adventure. Awesome all the way.

The new trailer is HERE and the short film that inspired it is HERE.
