What would Perseus Do? See the ‘Clash of the Titans’ trailer!

Nov 11th, 2009–

Ye children of the Nineteen-Hundred and Eighties gather round! Behold the glimpse of things soon to pass and the return of a friend from the desert of memory! Clash of the Titans has returned….sort of.

When I was a kid, no movie got more play in our house than Clash of the Titans. The monsters were scary, but just enough, the heroes got trounced but got back up, and Pegasus the flying horse was a wonder. What made that old version zing was special effects maestro Ray Harryhausen’s stop-motion creatures. Their presence makes Clash seem older than it is, but they also give the film its heart and character.

And you know what, while this new doesn’t quite have the classical sensibilities of that one, I like its visual look and unlike most remakes it actually resembles the film it’s drawing from. I don’t know how the story has been changed but many of the characters are here, and they at least evoke that Harryhausen sense of wonder; Medusa, the Stygian witches, Kalabos’ giant scorpions, the flying harpies (think they have been ported over from Jason and the Argonauts) and of course , Perseus.

Gripe about the fact they remade this all you want, but for me, this is the first time I’ve been remotely excited for anything coming our way next summer (yes, Iron Man, that includes you) and it looks far better than Prince of Persia. Here’s hoping that Titans can find and fulfill its destiny.

I want someone to go back and cut new style trailers to old action movies. That way I’ll see the amped up trailer and not be let down by the movie.
