Trailer Round-Up: The Expendables, Toy Story 3, Parnassus and more..

Oct 14th, 2009–

Welcome back to another installment of Trailer Round-Up. This one is gonna be short and sweet but not lacking in content. Here are some of the latest and greatest trailers buzzing out there on the net.

Of most notice right now is the sneak peak at Sly Stallone’s 80s-charged action flick that brings the Italian Stallon into the orbit of action mainstays like Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren and then throws in colorful faces like Mickey Rourke, Eric Roberts, Terry Crewes and a hinted at Ahnuld cameo. The trailer itself looks like what you would expect, and chances are it will be all that the fanbase hopes for and everything those waiting for Stallone ‘s return to his indie  roots (ala Rocky)  feared it would be.

Toy Story 3  doesn’t even really need a trailer. You could have used that teaser to maintain excitement or interest all the way to June and then just released the film. Well, now we have one and to be honest, it looks entertaining but possibly like the franchise is being pushed in an unecessary direction. Then again, that’s exactly the way Toy Story 2 looked and  it turned out to be better than the first. No worries here. I’ve long since drunk the Pixar Kool-Aid.

What a gorgeous and intriguing trailer. I’ve been awaiting the return of Gilliam for years now–since 1996’s Twelve Monkeys to be precise. Yes, I know he had one big misadventure with Don Quixote and actually did make two films in 2005, but all of that recent work lacked the spark that such masterpieces like Time Bandits, Brazil and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen posessed. Wth this picture–which includes Heath Ledger’s last performance–Gilliam looks poised to re-enter the landscape of well-regarded fantasists.

Yes, the trailer for the American release of John Woo’s Red Cliff looks lovely, but it makes me uneasy. I’ve seen both Chinese installments of this hefty saga and can attest to the fact it’s a great movie. Action fans will no doubt find themselves in heaven, and in terms of scale Woo really delivered an epic historical adventure here. Why worry then? This release combines both films into a near 3 hour running time when each film individually was nearly that length.

Expendables might just be good I think.

That poster is ok, very Seven Swordsy to me. But I’m not the best person to ask about new Asian epic movies. I find them all to be very similar. Though I have loved what I’ve seen with Red Cliff 1, why I haven’t watch 2?????
