Dude Fest and ‘Lebowski’ abide in Baltimore this Saturday!

3 Jun

June 3rd, 2009-

You want a toe? I can get you a toe, believe me. There are ways, Dude. You don’t wanna know about it, believe me.
Hell, I can get you a toe by 3 o’clock this afternoon… with nail polish. These …amateurs! ” – Walter Sobchack, The Big Lebowski

Carving out it’s own unique niche in American pop culture,  the penultimate Coen brothers epic of  mere mortals facing the darkness of nihilism and the random chaos of the universe has won accolades right and left since the time of its release. No Country for Old Men, right? Ha! We are talking The Big Lebowski here, the Coen’s laugh-out loud 98 comedy that combines post-modernist straw grabbing, stoner humor and noir potboiler with a savage, glowering John Goodman thrown in for added effect. But like I need to tell you.

It would have been hard for me to imagine it back in 1998 but the Dude has definitely abided. Slowly gathering steam over the past 10 years, Lebowski and ‘The Dude’ (Jeff Bridges) at its center haven’t just developed a fanbase; they have their own breed of follower. And whether you are a neophyte into all things The Dude or you are the kind of fan that owns a set of the items below, ‘Dude Fest: A Big Lebowski Tribute’ might just be the event for you.

Lebowski action figures... I wonder if there are little plastic underwear in Walter's bag?

Taking place at the Patterson Creative Alliance off of Eastern Avenue on Saturday night starting at 7:00 p.m, this quirky shindig will feature White Russians, costume judging, a dress code limited to bathrobes and bowling bowls, wii bowling and a screening of the movie at 10:00 p.m. In addition, theres going to be live music including Lebowski themed music by the eclectic Big Blow and the Bushwackers who carry a diverse number of instruments in the arsenal .

My wife and I recently watched The Big Lebowski for the first time in years, and I was delighted to find its odder now than when I first laid peepers on it a decade ago. Goodman is still the psychotic center of the film and The Dude the mellow soul. While it’s a ton of fun in the comfort of your home I can imagine theres a certain atmosphere here that will add all kinds of odd to the experience. Either way, keep an eye out for Aimee Mann as the girlfriend of one of the Nihilists(hint-she has nine instead of the usual ten).

The blurb from the Creative Alliance’s website is posted below and you can check out the website HERE.

              Sat Jun 6. Doors 7pm, show 7:30pm, film 10pm.
             $15, $12 in adv.

Don your bathrobes and bowling shirts for a celebration of all things Lebowski: Film screening! Wii bowling! White Russians! Costume contest! SoBo Sheiks open, then Dude Fest organizer and hard-core Lebowki fan Don Plehn leads Big Blow and the Bushwackers in a Dude tribute set! Plus a rug that really ties the event together! The Dude abides… shouldn’t you?

[…] Who are these people?  Much like the nebulous “Nickelback fan”, I’ve never met a single person who will admit paying good money for a Suicide Silence album.  But believe me, they’re out there.  Leaving comments on youtube videos and going to Dude Fest (oh wait, there really is a Dude Fest?) […]
