‘Prince of Persia:Curse of the Black Pearl’ trailer arrives!
Nov. 3rd, 2009–

Wow. I’m wondering if Disney even knows how to cut good trailers anymore.
I wish I could be more excited for this one. Afterall, it’s one of the big summer tentpole movies.
It took me a few moments to process Donnie Darko as a swashbuckler, but more than that, it’s the 1999 Mummy sand fx that seem out of place here. I’m not digging the excessive use of digital imagery and the central plot seems like a cookie-cutter genre affair. For a movie with its own established franchise, Persia looks a bit too much like LOTR, Indiana Jones and Pirates of the Caribbean stirred into a giant CGI stew.
The interactions between Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton seem like fun and I’m always up for that family-friendly adventure film that Disney once did so well. Seeing Alfred Molina and Ben Kingsley in the cast is also encouraging. I’m hoping that this surprises me in the same way that the original POTC did. I was quite unmoved by that trailer as well, but all of the elements worked together to deliver one of the best live action Disney films ever.
Here’s hoping, this is more Pirates than Tomb Raider. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time opens on May 28th, 2010. See the trailer below:
Yawn. can’t work up any interest in this and Gyllanhall annoys me. It looks like a bunch of suburban mall kids got together to make a movie.
